Abstract
This study is to investigate how death education program can have an impact on death anxiety, depression, and quality of life for elderly people at nursing homes. Forty-six elderly people at nursing home A participated in the program. They are a heterogeneous group of people, and were divided into an experiment group and a control group, to undergo pre-, post-education tests and a follow-up test. With the collected data, independent sample t-test was conducted to test homogeneity, using SPSS Win 22.0. Repeated Measures ANOVA was conducted to test difference of the two groups on death anxiety, depression, and quality of life according to timing of test. Finally, paired Sample t-test was conducted to test meaningfulness of the two groups according to timing of test. The main research findings are as follows. The death education program significantly reduced death anxiety and depression of an experiment group, and improved their quality of life; and these effects were maintained until the follow-up test. On the other hand, there was no meaningful difference of death anxiety, depression, and quality of life for the control group during pre-, post-education tests and a follow-up test. In conclusion, the death education program can have a positive impact on death anxiety, depression, and quality of life for elderly people at nursing homes. Based on these results, meanings and implications of this study were discussed.
